Biking, kickbiking, skating
Experience Pieterburen and the surroundings for a change by bike. All around Pieterburen, you can take wonderful, tranquil biking trips. From village to village to visit nice galleries, museums, lovely churches and old 'borgen', monumental manor houses. Bike over the sea dyke right next to the sea to Lauwersoog and treat yourself to a freshly caught fish at this fishing port, or to Noordpolderzijl, a tidal harbour with a quaint cafe. Outdoor Sport Centre 'De Groene Kicker' in Pieterburen has bikes, kickbikes, and skates for rent. If you bike on the LF10 along the Noordzeekust, you also pass through Pieterburen.
Boating
On the Groninger Maren, the natural waterways, you can make a peaceful canoe trip or tour around with a quiet 'fluisterboot'. Information: De Groene Kicker in Pieterburen and Marenland in Winsum.
Hiking
In Pieterburen and the surrounding villages you will find lovely hiking routes that sometimes go along old church paths. The Landloop is a prepared hiking route near Pieterburen over rough terrain and farmsteads. Discover the Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer and take a hike with the forest ranger through the rich plant and animal environment. The park is a favourite location for bird watchers. Pieterburen is the starting point for the longest hiking route in the Netherlands,the Pieterpad, ending in Maastricht.
The hiking route Wad en Wierdenpad also passes through Pieterburen.
Wadlopen or Mud Flat Hiking
Take a hike over the mud flats of the Waddenzee, a truly sensational experience! Twice a day, the Waddenzee stands clear of water, and then you can experience the vastness of the area, until the rising tide washes away your freshly made footsteps. Swimming
Near Lauwersoog you will find lovely, sheltered beaches on the Lauwersmeer, where you can have a great swim. Near Warffum you will find the Openluchtzwembad, or Open-air Public Swimming Pool, in de Breede, with a large playing field.
