Schiermonnikoog
If you plan to stay a weekend or longer in Pieterburen it's worth visiting the 'wadden' island Schiermonnikoog for a day. If you take the ferry in the morning, you can wander around the island and return by boat in the evening.
Groningen
When staying longer, a visit to the city of Groningen is a must. At the VVV, the Tourist information, you can find a city tour along all sorts of quiet, hidden places, the 'begijnhofjes'. The whole year is full of interesting events.
Dokkum
Dokkum and Moddergat lie just on the other side of the Lauwersmeer and are lovely, old villages. The centre of Dokkum is filled with many nice shops. Moddergat is an old fishing village right on the shores of the Waddenzee. In this protected rural area lies the open air museum, 't Fiskershúske.
Zoutkamp
Zoutkamp is a village with a rich history. In former times it was a bastion with a canon that could prevent ships coming from the sea from sailing along the Reitdiep to the city of Groningen. It was also a harbour for the many fishing boats. The houses on the harbour have been beautifully restored. In them you will find a Fishing Museum and an eel smokehouse. A short ride to Houwerzijl and you can have a cup of tea at the Theefabriek. You can choose from 300 sorts.
