Churches
The countryside of Groningen has as a distinguishing feature a large variety of old churches. These historical places of worship with their sober architecture and modest interiors offer a typical image of former times.
The Petruskerk in Pieterburen has a regal interior full of woodcarvings, because the nobility invested a great deal in it. Concerts are organized in many churches.

Manor Houses
Manor houses are the luxurious country homes of the former nobility, surrounded by motes and beautiful gardens. In Leens you can find the manor houseVerhildersum and in Uithuizen the Menkemaborg.

Windmills
In many of the villages of Groningen you'll find a windmill, sometimes more than one. The windmill in Pieterburen is called the Vier Winden and has been recently restored. The one in Eenrum is called the Lelie, and it houses a hobby bakery. The windmill Joeswert in Feerwerd still grinds its own grain.

Museums
The history of the Hoogeland is told in the various museums in the region. It is a tale of the age-old battle against the sea. The 'wierden', man-made hills, are this battle's visible heritage. Go on an exploration through the nature, over winding paths to special villages, like Ezinge where the wierdenmuseum will tell you all about it. In the openluchtmuseum in Warffum you can take a look into various homes to see how people used to live and work here. Zoutkamp was, before the Lauwerszee was closed off, a lively fishing village. In the visserijmuseum they can tell you all about it.

Art
This picturesque region inspires many artists. For this reason many of them live here. You can visit them in their studios on every first Sunday of the month. SeeAtelierroute 99The Groninger museum is only a half hour's ride from here.
